Le château de Bonaguil

Le château de Bonaguil est situé en France, dans le Lot-et-Garonne, entre le Périgord et le Quercy (sur la carte postale, il est représenté à gauche, et on voit une carte de France qui indique par un point blanc où se trouve le Lot-et-Garonne, mais en vrai le château se situe près de la ville de Fumel que l'on voit au nord-ouest, à côté de l'écusson).

Sa construction débute au XIIIème siècle, mais il est fortement modifié au début du XVIème siècle par le seigneur d'alors qui lui ajoute tous les perfectionnements défensifs du Moyen-Âge. Il intègre la toute nouvelle technologie liée à la dernière découverte : l'artillerie. Une imposante barbacane est construite et couvre l'accès au château, des canonnières sont installées par dizaines dans les tours et dans les courtines, on construit des chambres de tir qui sont à l'abri des boulets adverses, on aménage à des fins défensives une grotte naturelle située sous l'éperon rocheux (la "bonne aiguille" qui a donné son nom au château)...

À son achèvement vers 1510, il apparaît cependant complètement obsolète. En effet, à cette époque du début de la Renaissance, les grandes familles nobles ainsi que le roi et ses proches commencent à construire les premiers châteaux de la Loire et, dans tout le royaume, de nombreuses forteresses médiévales sont peu à peu transformées en endroits plus agréables par la destruction d'une partie des tours et des courtines afin de leur offrir plus de lumière et d'avoir une belle vue sur les jolis paysages de campagne.

Le château de Bonaguil est aujourd'hui dans un bon état de conservation. Il n'eut jamais à subir d'attaque et fut habité jusqu'à la Révolution.

Maintenant, des acteurs aiment bien faire des reconstitutions de batailles du  Moyen-Âge, même si Bonaguil n'a pour de vrai jamais été attaqué !

Pay it Forwards

Throughout December, children around the school have been doing good deeds for each-other, other classes and classes in other sections. This morning, CE2 baked some oatmeal cookies for the cleaning team as a token of thanks for keeping our school nice and clean all the time, so that we have a pleasant environment in which to learn and play.  

We had fun baking the cookies, thanks to Stephanie, Lisa and Yveline.. 

Two of the cleaning ladies came up to the class to collect the box of cookies which they took downstairs to share with their colleagues. Unfortunately I forgot the raisins, but hey-ho.. we hope that the team enjoy their cookies as they are.

Le Parthénon

Après la victoire de l’armée grecque sur les Perses, les grecs bâtissent un temple
consacré à la déesse grecque Athéna, protectrice de la cité et déesse de la
guerre et de la sagesse.
Ce temple, appelé le Parthénon, est situé sur une colline rocheuse, l’Acropole, et domine la belle ville d’Athènes.

Il a été construit de -447 à -432 par l'architecte Ictinos et décoré par le sculpteur Phidias, à l'initiative de Périclès, qui gouvernait alors Athènes.
De nombreux architectes, sculpteurs, peintres et menuisiers participent à sa construction. Ce temple est construit en marbre blanc, tout comme le Taj Mahal.

C’est l’un des plus beaux édifices de l’Antiquité.
Durant cette période, dans la pièce centrale du bâtiment, on abritait les richesses de la ville et une très grande statue d’Athéna. Les habitants n’avaient pas accès à cette salle.

Premiers pas dans l'univers du codage !

Nous avons aujourd'hui fait nos premiers pas dans l'univers du codage !

L'idée était de dessiner en utilisant juste des lignes de commande. Le résultat est parfois surprenant, et pour un beau début, c'est un beau début !

iBook Recounts

All the recounts are in except one who was away today. You can take a look at them here. I'm pleased with the overall standard and I think you will be too.. All the work is the children's own. I made the children aware if there were mistakes on the pages of the work books as usual, but it was up to them to identify and correct them before copying them electronically. Enjoy!

New serious games in the class: Motion Math

We started to play with some new serious games on our class iPads, and the students wanted the link to upload them and continue improving their maths skills at home.

To start playing, download the free Educator app to your iPad and use my access code (xbciw) to sign in.

They have a nice and interesting bundle with all their apps for around NT$1200, but at the moment, please use the Educator App: we can follow on a dashboard what our students do (in class or at home) and see their progress on it.

For the moment, we introduced:
- Hungry Fish (addition, subtraction, negatives )
- Cupcake (word problems, coordinates, economics)
- Wings (Multiplication)

The other available games are:
- Pizza Economics (mental math, proportions)
- Questimate (estimation, measurement)
- Fractions  (fractions, decimals, percents)

- Match (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Les mégalithes de Carnac

Les alignements de Carnac sont situés dans Morbihan en Bretagne.

Il s'agit d'un site d'alignements mégalithiques exceptionnel constitué d'alignements de menhirs, de dolmens et d'allées couvertes et réparti sur plus de quatre kilomètres.

Les alignements de Carnac sont les ensembles mégalithiques les plus célèbres et les plus impressionnants de cette période avec près de 4 000 pierres levées.
La construction des alignements semble dater du milieu du IVe millénaire, dans la période de la Préhistoire dite du "Néolithique".

Final recounts - further clarification

Further to my mail and post yesterday can I just point out that the 4 or 5 photos for the kids' recount e-books should be from the same event, so that they can write one detailed recount about one event. 

Please also make sure that your child knows what photographs you will send. Discussing it with them and showing them the photos as you go along will make the whole process much easier and relevant for them.

The Water Cycle

The kids have been working on the water cycle for the past couple of weeks as you know. Last week they made a model to illustrate the cycle and some 

 remixed or made their own Bitstrip over the weekend too.. 

Many thanks to Elisa, Celine and Sophia for coming in and helping out with the model making. We couldn't have managed without you!

Final Recounts

As you know we have been working on writing recounts this term in English literacy. The kids have seen many different examples, picked them apart, re-written them from different points of views, written biographical and auto-biographical recounts. They have thought about and practised writing in greater detail and how to make their writing more interesting for the reader.  

It's time now for one last recount which they will write next week. I would like them to make an e-book using the iPads and then share these with each other, other classes and you. 

To make the e-book more interesting I have asked the children to include some photographs to go in their e-books. I expect they will need your help for this. 

Something the kids have learned about writing recounts is that they don't have to be about exciting or special events. They can be about something as simple as a meal with Grand-ma, buying a new pair of shoes or going for a swimming lesson so there is always something to write about!

If sometime between now and next Monday you could talk to your child about a recount they will write and then take some photos or lend them your smart phone so they can take a few pictures, then next week's literacy activities will be much more meaningful and enjoyable.

If you could e-mail the photos to me before Monday, I will store them somewhere for the kids to access when they need them.

Les mosaïques de Saint-Romain en Gal

Dans l'antiquité, Saint-Romain-en-Gal, situé sur la rive droite du Rhône, était un vaste quartier résidentiel et commercial de la ville de Vienna, alors une des principales villes de la Gaule romaine.

Au XIXème siècle, on y découvre un nombre considérable de mosaïques.
Des fouilles archéologiques révèlent toute l’ampleur et la richesse de ce quartier.

Devant l’intérêt exceptionnel du site, le site est classé monument historique et bénéficie d'importants travaux de restauration.


La Mosaïque du calendrier agricole


Maintenant, Saint-Romain en Gal célèbre encore son passé antique en organisant des journées gallo-romaines au cours desquelles on peut découvrir la culture et la vie quotidienne d'il y a 1800 ans.

Les arènes d'Arles

Au début de l'année, en présentant le pont du Gard, nous avions pu voir les arènes de Nîmes dans un épisode de C'est pas sorcier.

En travaillant sur "La nuit étoilée" de Vincent Van Gogh, nous avions parlé d'Arles, la ville du Sud de la France dans laquelle il s'est installé en 1886, de nombreuses années avant les grands-parents d'Angeline.

Aujourd'hui, nous allons donc parler des arènes d'Arles.

Les Arènes d'Arles sont un amphithéâtre romain construit vers 80 ap. J.-C. / 90 ap. J.-C. et ont une longueur totale de 136 mètres, soit une dimension supérieure à celle des arènes de Nîmes. Cet édifice pouvait accueillir 25 000 spectateurs.

Construit pour les jeux, il reste en fonction jusqu’à la fin de l’Empire romain.
En 255, l'empereur Gallus y fait organiser des jeux en célébration des victoires remportées par ses armées dans les Gaules. Au début du ive siècle, Constantin y fait représenter de grandes chasses et des combats à l'occasion de la naissance de son fils aîné. Plus tard, Majorien y donne plusieurs spectacles. Enfin, en 539, Childebert, roi mérovingien de Paris, veut qu'on renouvelle en sa présence les jeux des romains antiques.

À la fin du VIème siècle, les arènes sont transformées en bastide, une sorte de forteresse sur laquelle on ajoute quatre tours et deux chapelles.
Petit à petit, ce théâtre devient une sorte de grand immeuble : 200 logements y sont contruits à l'intérieur !

En 1516, François Ier visite la ville et s’étonne de trouver ces belles arènes dans un si triste état.

Ce n'est qu'en 1830, 56 ans avant que Van Gogh ne vienne s'installer à Arles, que les gens qui habitent à l'intérieur sont expulsés et que les arènes retrouvent leur fonction initiale : celle d'être un lieu de fêtes et de jeux.

On y organise encore maintenant des courses de taureaux.

Cardboard Boxes

Hi - please remember to save any boxes you use at home or have ready to be recycled. The kids need one each for next Wednesday in order to make a water cycle model. The size of a cereal packet or shoe box is the perfect size. Thanks.

Bitstrips!

Our first Bitstrips are in the Gallery  ready for the rest of the class to look at and comment on. Well done to Rémi, Lucas, Claire and Evelien. I look forward to seeing lots more soon!

Parallel lines, Perpendicular lines and the Water Cycle

We've started to look at shape this week in maths and the kids have first been learning about right angles, perpendicular and a parallel lines before we go into further details next week.. One of the tasks this week was to go out and about and find examples of all three.. Here are some of what they found..

In science, we have come back to the water cycle which is what we started just before I fell off my bike and was off for two weeks.. The children are familiar with the idea of the water cycle but we'll be looking in greater detail over the coming two or three weeks.. 

Here are a couple of songs which got them back in the mood this afternoon...

I asked the kids to start bringing boxes to school as soon as possible. Next week we will make water cycle dioramas. I'll provide everything we need except the boxes. Shoe boxes, cereal boxes or any other similar size boxes will be ideal. 

Bitstrips for Schools

Your child may have told you about Bitstrips over the weekend or you may know about it because you have a child in another class who has used it before. 

It's an on-line comic creator which can be used for all sorts of activities. It can be a fun way for the children to learn and has been very popular in the past. It takes a while to get the hang of manipulating the character, but in my experience, the children pick it up pretty quickly once they know the basics.

Comics can be 'graded' by me and sent back for amendments if it's a specific task, and kids are welcome to create their own for fun. Comics are shared in the class gallery where they can be commented on by the rest of the class members. 

Last week the kids logged in and created a password. They log in by simply entering the class code: CE2-2015, they then select their own names from the drop down tab, and then enter their own password. I suggested they use the same one as mathletics.

I've started the kids off today with a quick demonstration of how to create comic strips, and there is an assigned activity on their pages. If they haven't yet created their characters, they will automatically be taken to the page before they begin the activity. Please note that whilst it is not obligatory to create comics, sometimes I will set an activity for homework, and the more familiar your child is with creating comics, the more fun and beneficial it becomes. I will post a link to the gallery as soon as there is something to see.

Le Cirque

Le Cirque est un tableau de Georges Seurat peint en 1890 que l'on peut découvrir au Musée d'Orsay à Paris. 

Nous sommes ici plongés en plein cœur d'une piste de cirque où tout semble tourner autour de l'écuyère au centre du tableau. Quand on s'approche très près du tableau, on découvre qu'il est composé avec des milliers de points de couleur. 

Cette technique, le pointillisme, part du principe scientifique que notre œil a le pouvoir de reconstituer automatiquement les couleurs. Le peintre ne les mélange pas, il laisse notre œil faire le travail.

Comme cela demande beaucoup de travail et de temps, Georges Seurat n'aura pu faire que sept grand tableaux tout au long de sa vie !

Recounts, Team Games and Measurements

The children have been working on length for the past 3 weeks during maths lessons in English. They have learnt about millimetres, centimetres, metres and the relationships which link them. They have learnt how to measure objects as well as lines, and express those lengths using different units of measurement (450mm = 45cm =  0.45m)

This week the children were challenged with making a half sized model of themselves with a partner. 

First they had to take measurements of various body parts, record the results then calculate the halves. Then they measured and cut up strips of paper and stapled them together accordingly, in order to produce a model which was half their size! 

Not an easy task, but I was pleased with the results. 

In English we have been continuing with the topic of writing recounts and this fortnight the children have written several. 

The first was based on some mixed up pictures of a couple of children winning a sand castle building competition, the emphasis was on the order which the events happened. 

The second was a recount of the trip to the astronomical museum. The emphasis was again on time words but also supporting sentences, to add information so that it was more than a list of events which took place. 

The third was about a boy, Ewan, who had been in  a swimming competition. The children were given two sentences which they had to add detail to so as to make the recount more detailed and interesting for the reader. 

Please take some time to read through your child's work this weekend. I think you'l be pleasantly surprised! Some excellent writing coming out of this unit.
