Reading Books

All the children have been given a reading book this afternoon to be taken home and read with an adult. Most children have been given 'orange' level, which is the expected reading level for CE2 bilingual readers.

Please help me to make sure your child has the appropriate reader by filling in the 'comment' on your child's reading record, by entering a comment such as 'too easy', 'too difficult', 'just right'. Remember that the right reading level isn't just about being able to read the words, but also how well your child understood the book, can summarise a page or answer questions about what they have read.

I will get around to listening to each child read individually, but until then, your help is greatly appreciated.

Children have been told that they should be reading at least one reader each week, and I will be checking reading records for progress.

Children are free to swap their books as often as they like, and don't need to ask me first.

Mathletics

Today the children have been given log in details for mathletics. (they are stuck in the back of the home-link diaries.) Mathletics is used for curriculum specific online maths activities which can complement work which is taught and practised in the classroom.

This week we have been revising place value (Th H T U) and today we were looking at how many Th H T U can be found in larger numbers.

For example, how many Tens are in the number 152. The answer isn't 5. There is a 5 in the Tens position but there are of course also 10 Tens in the Hundred. So the answer is 15.

Please take a moment to log in to mathletics with your child as I will be using it for homework on a regular basis.

The first 3 activities have been posted today to be done over the weekend if possible.

Golden Rules

Work has begun in CE2 now as systems are getting into place and the children are beginning to get used to their new learning environment. Last week we talked about what we need to do in order to create a positive learning environment for everyone. Here's what we came up with..

I have introduced an incentive scheme to the English classroom now which works very simply. Children have been given a 'star card' and are rewarded as they demonstrate good understanding of the golden rules. In order to gain a stamp on the card they simply need to stick to the rules.

Children who have earned 10 stamps in a two week period are rewarded with a period of golden time every week A Monday. Golden time activities might include extra sport, extra ICT, art, cooking, board games, etc. Children who haven't managed to earn their 10 stamps will need to complete unfinished work, do corrections, read to me, etc.

Please encourage your child by asking whether or not they have earned any stamps during the day and what they were earned for. You might like to talk about how they can make sure that they will earn extra stamps on the following day if they don't earn any stamps during a day.

Welcome!

Welcome to the CE2 blog for academic year 2015/16. Here you will find posts from Florian and myself to keep you informed about what's happening in the class regarding academic work, homework, special activities and anything else that we think you should know about along with photos and videos of the children.

First I'd like to introduce Joanna, Evelien and Léonard who have joined TES this year. CE2 is now formed of 11 girls and 13 boys.

The children have been busy finding their way around their new classroom, mingling and finding out a bit about what the rest of the class got up to over the holiday, making labels, finding out what books are needed and when, as well as telling me a bit about themselves by making a little booklet, called "All about me". You'll be able to have a look next week if you come to the introduction meeting in the CE2 classroom next Thursday 27th at 1800hrs. Florian and I will introduce ourselves at the meeting, let you know what the children will be learning over the coming year, a bit about how we'll be delivering it, as well as what you can do to help at home. We hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Next I'd like to refer you to the e-mail I have sent this afternoon regarding swimming lessons which start next week. Please check your e-mail for information.

I expect that by now you have seen your child's homelink diary. Please make sure your child remembers this every day. It is an important resource for communication between us and you. Homework is recorded inside and so it is vital that it is in the school bag every day.  The book has been updated with the timetables today for your information. Please take your time to read the front and back of the book with your child and both sign it to say that you have done so. There is lots of useful and important info in the book, and should serve as a "one stop shop" for most general information along with this blog.

There is also a homework tab at the top of this blog in case you want to check and your child somehow forgot to record it in his/her homelink diary.

That's it for now. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday.
