The children have been working more on mathematical word problems this week. We started with simple one step problems, which will progress on to 2 and 3 steps after the break. To see what method we have been using, you can have a look at a power-point I made here. It's important that the children really try yo use the RUCSAC method before starting a problem. This way there is a much better chance of understanding the maths which is required. The resource I posted last week can be used to practise using the RUCSAC method.
A big well done to Loic, Justine, Lauren and Evelien for their continued efforts in attempting all three of the activities for homework each time. I look forward to reading their stories each week! Excellent effort, and wonderful work. Well done!!
In English the children have been busy with their adventure story writing this week and most have by now got a first draft which will be developed in the coming weeks after the holiday. Today we looked at how to write dialogue using speech marks with a view to including some in their stories. Nearly everybody knows what speech marks are, but the bar for writing dialogue in CE2 is of course a bit higher than it was in CE1, so everybody had something new to learn. Have a look at the power-point hereto see what is expected in CE2. The vocabulary words for the holiday homework are all alternatives for 'said'. This is to encourage children to use different words to 'said' when they are writing dialogue in their stories. I'm delighted to see that some of the previous weeks' vocabulary list words are starting to be used in some of the children's writing in class. Perfect!!

A couple of requests from parents at the meetings yesterday I think are worth sharing with everybody. Hereis a link to an English BBC news website especially for children. Some of the material will be a little beyond the comprehension of CE2 aged children, but there is also plenty on there that is entirely suitable, and I think they might really enjoy watching some of the stories and features. Here is a link to a website full of maths word problems. They start easy and get progressively more difficult. Children can do and check the problems on-line. As I discussed with many of you yesterday, we are focusing on these types of problems each morning for twenty minutes instead of the daily calculation practice which we were doing before. We'll return to the calcul later in the year to brush up for the second round of the MCCMT in May.

malheureusement
Ida poussait des
hurlements
Elle en poussait
tellement, tellement
Que j'ai murmuré
doucement :
« Quand on a mal aux dents
Il faut aller
chez le dentiste
Les fleurs, c'est
évident
Vont s'acheter
chez la fleuriste
Si les chapeliers
vendaient des boules de gomme
Si les
pharmaciens vendaient des métronomes
Si les horlogers vendaient
d'la viande hachée
Y aurait plus
moyen d'aller faire son marché
Il est toujours
prudent
De s'adresser aux
spécialistes
Quand on a mal
aux dents
Il faut aller
chez le dentiste »
Mademoiselle Ida,
depuis quelques semaines

CE2 were estimating the capacities of various containers in their maths lesson this morning, then checking how close they were with measuring cylinders and calculating the differences. They learned the standard notation for measuring capacity and volume and are able to change between the two.. Luckily we're no longer using pints and gallons!!
In science this afternoon we have been learning about reproduction in flowering plants as part of the life cycles which we started last week. In order to do this we looked at the parts of a flower and what each part is called and I briefly introduced what each part is for.. Lots of new vocabulary, but well understood I think..
You might like to review these with your child before Monday, to reinforce what they learnt today.
Male part: the stamen comprising the pollen producing anther and the filament which it is attached to.
Female part: the carpel or pistil comprising the stigma, which collects the pollen before sending it down through the style where it reaches the ovary and ultimately the eggs or ovules.
The sepel protects the flower before it blooms and the petals look pretty to attract bees, birds, bats and other insects.
Here's a quick rundown of what's been going on since the last blog, just in case the answer to your question, "What did you do today?" is usually, "Not much!"
Last week the children started to look at different ways to describe characters in their story writing; what they look like, what they are doing, and what their personalities are. Today they were introduced to 'show not tell'. This is where an author describes a character's emotion by saying what they can see rather than the emotion itself. For example: A telling sentence might be, Harry was very happy. A showing sentence might be, Harry opened his eyes and he grinned from ear to ear. We know from the showing sentence that Harry was happy, but we don't need to tell the reader that he was happy. The kids practised this morning, by choosing an emotion and writing what the character was showing them without using the adjective of emotion itself. How would you show not tell what these characters are feeling..?
Later, one child read their show not tell sentence, another acted it out, and rest of the class had to guess the emotion.
Can you guess what the emotions Arthur, Andrea and Joanna are acting out are..? To be continued... The kids are ready for the first round of the Mental Maths competition which is coming up on Friday. They achieved a whopping 95% average this morning!! I hope they haven't peeked too early and that nerves don't get the better of them on Friday!! Wish them luck!! Now that the children are familiar with the characteristics of living things, we started looking at life cycles today. This afternoon they were introduced to germination and the conditions required in order for a seed to begin its life.
Here are the stages of germination..
Water
Oxygen
Warmth
are the conditions usually required for a seed to germinate although we did discover a couple of exceptions to the rule too..
Photosynthesis is the process by which a plant turns sunlight into food in order for it to grow and survive. The first two leaves which are produced by a seedling after the root has grown into the ground and the shoot has sprouted towards the light are the first leaves which allow this process to happen, and so begins the growth from seedling to plant.. Next week we will continue with the life of the plant and see how the cycle continues around and around.
